Mason was surprised when Nathan asked him to go fishing with him. He always went with Logan. They were the same age, and they did almost everything together. But Mason didn’t ask questions; he just said yes.

That night, Mason set his alarm. Nathan told him you have to get to the lake before the sun comes up. That’s when the fish are hungry, he said.

Morning came, and Mason looked out his bedroom window. Nathan was sitting on his bike with his fishing gear strapped to the back of it. Mason grabbed his fishing pole and ran out the back door. He grabbed his bike and met Nathan out front.

“You ready?” Nathan asked.

“Yup,” Mason replied.

“I caught a bunch of nightcrawlers last night. They make great bait for using bobbers.”

“Cool,” Mason said and then yawned.

The boys rode their bikes down to Smithfield Lake and arrived just as the sun was coming up.

“Here, put this worm on your hook. Poke it a couple of times so it won’t slip off.”

Mason did as he was told.

“How come you aren’t fishing with Logan?” Mason asked.

“Well, he kept telling this story about a fish in the lake that was so strong it would pull kids in and eat them.”

“You think he was making it up?”

“I did. Until he disappeared.”

Stock Photo Stories give you the real stories behind the photos. That I might have made up.
