And there is a difference between those who write as a career and those who do it as a creative outlet. If you make something you love into a career, you often have to focus on the business/promotion side of it far more than you anticipated. And the part you love gets diminished. (I face these issues as a musician also.)

I guess it is a matter of what is more important to you. Followers (potential income) or connections (potential relationships.)
