Be Like Brandy

The ultimate lifehack

There is no shortage of articles on how to be the best you. But there is simply no greater insight into hacking this crazy thing called life than the song Brandy by the Looking Glass.

Two lines from the chorus will tell you all you ever need to know about life:

Brandy, you’re a fine girl
What a good wife you would be

Let’s unpack those two lines and see what they have to say about life.

Brandy is a waitress at a busy port bar. But it doesn’t define her. No sir. It is who she is as a person that defines her. The sailors can tell she is a fine girl. Which, in turn, would make her a good wife. See how that works?

No one said, “Brandy, you’re a great waitress.” It doesn’t matter that much. What you do is unimportant. Being fine is the thing that counts.

Sure, the sailor she loves— the one who gave her a braided chain made of the finest silver from the north of Spain, with a locket bearing his name — is more in love with the sea (“his life, his lover, his lady”) than her (hey, “he was an honest man.”) But Brandy is fine! The sailors say it. She needs to claim it. Own it.

Say it! “I am fine!”
