This was a day I was really looking forward to. Lee and I were going to be riding bicycles down Pikes Peak. We booked the bike trip with Challenge Unlimited. They would provide the bikes and guides and get us to the mountain and back. We opted for riding the Pikes Peak Cog Railroad up the mountain instead of taking a van.

We arrived at Challenge Unlimited’s location at 7:30 a.m. There were signed some paperwork saying we understood that riding a bicycle down a mountain is inherently dangerous, and we had no one to blame but ourselves if we crashed or flew off the edge or hit a yeti. Or something like that. We met our fellow riders and were given a light breakfast and safety instructions. Then we were fitted for bikes.

It’s early.

Eventually, the van was loaded up with bikes, extra clothes, and other gear. We all piled in.
