Homes Of The Über Rich

Thoughts On The American Dream

I walked into the living room and the television was on a program showing the houses of the über-rich.

A woman was saying, “We spent two million dollars on the kitchen…”

Dumbstruck, I watched for a couple minutes.

It seemed like every room in the house cost two million dollars.

I thought, what if they only spent a half million on their kitchen and gave a million and a half dollars to charities that feed hungry people?

Or only spent one million on their bedroom and gave one million dollars worth of mattresses to people working three minimum wage jobs to scrape by.

Or only had one gigantic garage full of vintage cars instead of three, and started a charity that provided used cars to people who needed transportation to get to work but couldn’t afford a car.

But I guess that would make for boring television.
