I also agree. Chord progressions or “feels” should not be copyright-able. Unless the chords AND melody of two songs are identical, there should be no copyright infringement. Most popular music is based on the same set of major and minor chords. They are the building blocks. Everyone was influenced by the music that came before them. Influence is not copyright infringement.
Should no one ever again be allowed to make a song that sounds like a Motown record? That’s ridiculous.
Can you copyright the minor chord progress Am Dm Em? That’s insanity. How many blues songs use the exact same chord progression and shuffle feel? Probably millions.
There needs to be some common sense involved in copyright law.
Of course, copyright lawsuits are usually about money. Artists (and their labels) would be better off creating something new than worrying about being copied. Or being greedy.
