I have been on Medium since 2018 (it's glory days.) There was a real feeling of creative community at the time, despite Medium's focus on non-fiction and complete ignoring of creative writing. I easily made between $100 and $200 per month. But it was the creative community that I enjoyed most.
When Medium switch the Partner Program to read-time in 2019, my pay was slashed by 90%. A ton of writers bailed out or quit writing. Including many of my favorites. The creative community dissolved. Click bait took over. It became harder and harder to find good stories to read.
So I started a Substack. I make more with 12 paid subscriber on Substack than I do with 2.6k followers on Medium. And I get regular readers and commenters.
Can Medium turn things around? I doubt there are enough paying subscribers to do so. Or good writers joining. I hope I'm wrong. I used to love Medium.
