If you don’t mind my part-time writer’s take on writer insecurity, I approach writing like I approach music. I know I am not in the big-leagues of writers and never will be. So the pressure is off to try to be. I simply try to be Mark Starlin and write Mark Starlin style to the best of my ability. I know I will improve with practice (just like playing an instrument), so I keep writing. And I enjoy the process and the experience of being a musician and writer.
A few people seem to like what I write, which makes me happy. I don’t need fame. I have a good life. I wish I could help you concerning making boat-loads of money, but I have no clue on that part.
And I think it is alright to take breaks from writing. Vacations are good for you.
