In answer to your question, if the captain knew they didn’t have enough provisions to complete the journey (a good captain would) then he was a fool to put profits before the crew’s lives.

And why wouldn’t the ship circle the island looking for possible inhabitants to trade with? Or at least go inland looking for fresh water and food (coconuts, fruit, animals?)

So I guess they were all foolish.
