You can build a world with only four numbers. Simply put a date at the top of your story. This technique is especially useful for flash or micro-fiction. Or any time you have a word count limitation.

If I put:

-1776 -

at the top of a story, most American readers will envision the setting of the American Revolution: powdered wigs, horse-drawn carriages, tall-mast sailing ships, etc.

Adding a city to the date can also be helpful. If I put:

Chicago, 1926

at the top of a story, gangsters, flappers, jazz, and prohibition come to mind.

Quick Writing Tips are writing techniques, tips, and tricks that I use in my writing. If you long to be an unknown writer like me, these tips can help.
