It is very common for the roles of musician, engineer, and producer to overlap these days. I recorded an album at home and played every role (and instrument.)

I would encourage you get a MIDI keyboard controller and start playing around with virtual instrument software (Logic include some.) Not counting keyboards and guitar, most instruments only play single-note lines, which you CAN learn to do. Try bass lines first.

If you play only the white keys you are in the key of C and can't hit a bad note. Then learn more keys ike G (all Fs are sharp.) Many synths allow one finger chords. You can learn to play parts.

Then you can play almost any virtual instrument and not be totally dependant on loops or samples.

Plus it's crazy fun.
