Music should always come first, in my opinion. Notation and theory are just ways to describe music, not necessarily the best approach to creating it. However, having the technique and knowledge to play what you imagine is very valuable. I don’t think learning to read music or taking lessons ever held anyone back or made them less creative. Any more than learning to read or write made anyone worse at speaking.

If you enjoy what you are doing musically, than you are doing it right!
