Musicians and true lovers of music develop the ability to pick out instruments and hear parts separately. Whereas most of the public hears music as a “wash” or wall of sound. Like it was a single thing. Most will focus on the singer but they rarely will hear a bass part or drum part as an individual thing (unless it is featured as a solo.) They just hear the different parts as a whole.
You’re right about lyrics also. Some love lyrics and some basically ignore them, treating them as part of the “groove.” They hear the lyrics, but they don’t really listen to the meaning of the lyrics. The story. It’s fascinating.
