My Writing Rules
What are yours?
2 min readNov 26, 2024
Whether they were learned at school, from writing courses, or gleaned from experience, writers typically have personal writing rules they follow.
I am no different. Except my writing rules came from an Outback Steakhouse motto (with a slight spelling variation):
No rules. Just write.
[The original Outback motto is: No rules, Just right.]
But I don’t recommend following my writing rules unless you enjoy being an internationally unknown author.
So ignore my writing rule and follow these other popular writing rules that are sure to rocket you to writing fame and fortune (no guarantees):
- Avoid adverbs.
- Never write sober.
- Kill your darlings.
- Get up before the birds to write. But don’t eat worms.
- Oxford commas are unecessary.
- Oxford commas are glorious. And essential to sound English.
- Write everything backward on paper, then type it onto your laptop while looking in a mirror.
- Stick to a niche. It’s better than sticking to a chair.
- Write for your reader.
