Not to make light of what you are experiencing, Jack, but I have been doing this since my early 20s (no brain injuries that I am aware of, other than being an overly active kid who hit his head a lot.)
My wife (Lee) is my memory. I am terrible with names. I have to see someone regularly for six months before I remember their name. And I have to know them for several years for it to become permanent. When I see someone and can't remember their name, Lee tells me their name, then tells me their kids names also. LOL!
It is really embarrassing for me as a guitar teacher. I have students say "Hi" a few years after they quit lessons and I don't remember their names, or sometimes, even having them as students.
My son-in-law's mother has later-stage Alzheimer's (in her 60s) and it is heartbreaking. I would not read that book either.
