The Phone Call That Restored My Hope As A Writer
Over the past three years writing on Medium, I have been blessed to consistently have a small number of Medium readers express that they enjoy my writing. I genuinely appreciate their compliments.
On the other hand, most of my real-world friends and family have zero interest in my writing. Anytime I posted about my writing on Facebook (my account is private and just for friends and family), it only got one or two likes, and those usually didn’t translate into reads. So I rarely bother. I have heard similar things from other writers. Their friends and family just aren’t interested in their writing.
I completed a years-long journey of writing my first novel in June of 2020. I have given the novel to a few friends and family. I also made it free on Amazon for my birthday and announced it on Facebook. About 20 friends and family downloaded it. Only two told me they enjoyed it. I am guessing most didn’t read it. Thankfully, a few of my Medium friends purchased the novel and left good reviews.
I realize my novel is not great literature. It is entertainment. But I think it is enjoyable, and I hoped it would have more readers.
I also know writing, like any creative field, is extremely difficult to gain recognition in. Plus, I was very late to the game…
