Jake and I grew up in the same blue-collar neighborhood. As kids, we rode bikes together, flew paper airplanes together, went fishing together. Basically, all the stuff kids typically do.

As these things usually go, when we got older, our interests became more diverse and different. I gravitated toward music and started playing guitar. Jake got into science.

I started a band.

Jake went off to college.

The years passed, and we lost touch.

I was playing a summer festival gig in New York when I looked out into the audience, and to my surprise, I saw my old pal Jake standing there grinning at me. After the show, I met him in front of the stage.

“Jake, it’s so good to see you.”

“You too, Matt. I see music worked out for you.”

“I was lucky. I found a good band.”

“You’re being modest. I have been listening to The Ice Ship since Beth told me you were in the band. She said you write all the songs.”

“That’s right. How is Beth?”

“Great. We’ve been married for seven years now. We have two boys, Benjamin and Matthew.”
