There is always that struggle between wanting to earn a living and wanting to do what you know has very limited appeal. As a musician, I completely relate and agree with this essay. I also know making a living in any creative field is incredibly hard. If you do something less commercial, like jazz, the odds get significantly higher. My main income comes from teaching guitar. I play in two bands to feed my soul (and to have fun.) Even then it is a balancing act. If you want to get gigs, you have to play something popular. I have a jazz band that plays a lot of standards to get gigs, so I can mix in some of my own original music during the gig. I am too old to start chasing a career in music, so it is a nice trade-off.
