Using Icons To Outline In Scrivener

Visual clues to storyline organization

One of the things I like about Scrivener is it allows me to see the outline of my novel as I write it. By creating folders for chapters and documents for scenes, I can visually outline my novel before writing it.

Here is the outline column for my first novel, Baron Britpop Blastfurnace.

The stock Scrivener folder and document icons work, but they are pretty boring.

As I was writing the sequel, Elsie Boissonneau, I came up with the idea of using people icons to represent the main character in each scene. I have two parallel storylines in the first part of the novel. Using different icons for the main characters, I can visually see the two storylines and how they are progressing before they eventually merge.

I purchased a set of icons on IconFinder called Professional Avatars. It had a pirate icon, which was a must. I use the pirate icon for Captain Peanut Butter, a female icon with a beret for Elise, a male icon for Britpop, and an older man icon for Grand Duke Grustin Goatbeard. I imported the…
