When my airline job got contracted out after 20 years, I started teaching guitar. Now I set the hours. No more working weekends or holdays for this guy. No more getting up at 3:30am to be at work at 5:00am. Mowing the grass is now a weekday activity.

Of course, like freelance writing, I always need new students (clients), and I make far less than I did loading airplanes. But my quality of life is far better. An acceptable trade-off.
