Why I Created A Personal Publication

Writers on Medium already have a profile page. Why make a personal publication also? For many writers, it may not be worth the effort. For me it was.

The two main reasons I just created a personal publication are organization and promotion.

The simple truth of the matter is, I want my writing to be read by as many people as possible. Plus, I am an organizing freak. Having my stories disappear down an endless single feed on my profile page is not ideal and tortured the organizer in me. I previously created an index of my stories, organized by type of writing, and feature it at the top of my profile page, but I am fairly confident I use it more than readers. It makes it easier to find old stories so I can add links to them at the bottom of new stories, but other than that I doubt it has much value.

Publications, on the other hand, are more like having your own website on Medium. You have far more control of the layout and you can create an index at the top of the page. Not only that, but the index appears at the top of every story in the publication (on a computer, not the mobile apps.) So now if someone reads one of my stories on a computer, there is a handy index with links to seven categories of my writing right at the top of the story. That is pretty sweet.
